Wake Up Call

May 15th, 2010 1 comment

Mother Nature woke me up this morning at 4:30 with a jolt.

The ‘small’ 3.0 earthquake felt larger because it was centered fairly close to me this time.

I quickly turned on the radio, checked for gas leaks in the kitchen, then went back to sleep.

Not fun, but part of life.  A reminder that we are not in charge.

Last Laugh?

Before posting this I checked it out on Snopes.Com.  It is true.  According to her daughter, Sherri Ann Weeks:”Mom always said she wanted a tombstone with a parking meter that said ‘time expired’.  She also requested it to be in the first row next to the highway so she could see what was going on. We gave her what she wanted.”

Barbara Sue Manire died on her 64th birthday and is interred at Highland Cemetary, Okemah, Oklahoma.

From the town website I found that as of the 2000 census, the total population was 3,038. (They just might get some tourist business now, thanks to Barbara Sue and her sense of humor.)

Laughing in the face of death?

I can’t help but wonder if Barbara Sue Manire was  a woman with a great sense of humor or a woman with great faith?

Was she able to laugh at death because she thought it  was the end, or  because she believed it was just the beginning?

Either way, her final request is bringing smiles to a place more acquainted with tears than laughter. She may have started a trend.
