Keep Smiling

A famous art collector is walking through the city when he notices a mangy cat lapping milk from a saucer in the doorway of a store and he does a double take. He recognizes that the saucer is extremely old and very valuable, so he walks casually into the store and offers to buy the cat for two dollars.
The storeowner replies “I’m sorry, but the cat isn’t for sale.
The collector says, “Please, I need a hungry cat around the house to catch mice. I’ll pay you twenty dollars for that cat.”
And the owner says “Sold,” and hands over the cat.
The collector continues, “Hey, for the twenty bucks I wonder if you could throw in that old saucer. The cat’s used to it and it’ll save me from having to get a dish.”
And the owner says, “Sorry buddy, but that’s my lucky saucer. So far this week I’ve sold sixty-eight cats.”

Armed Forces Day

May 21st, 2011 Comments off

It is easy to take our Armed Forces for granted – until war.

When those reports start coming in of lives lost, of men and women wounded and broken, of families split apart, then we start to realize what it means to be in the military.  It means to be ‘ready’ to defend this country.  Ready and willing to give it all in service.

In times of peace, as rare as they are these days, many join up thinking it a good way to grow up, get in shape, get some direction for their young lives unsure of what they want to do next.  It is a way to get an education and a trade.  That plan has worked for many who gave the military a few years, got out and went on with a civilian life more disciplined and mature.

But these days when a person signs on the dotted line, they know they are looking at a very serious intervention into their lives.  They hear the reports too.  They have friends and loved ones who have gone before them, yet they are determined to get that uniform, to become a part of something greater than themselves.

To all who have served or are serving now, I give you my thanks and prayers. May you be protected, mind, body and spirit.
