“Just Being Jana”

December 31st, 2012 Comments off

DEAR DRUNKEN GIRL WHO CALLED AT 4:54AM:
I believe you said your name was Jennifer? Well, Jennifer, Honey…First off….Yes, the moon was beautiful and I appreciate you pointing that out. We can never see too many moons….Secondly… No, there is no Jim at this number, which my outgoing message should have explained…. As well as my reply to the follow-up text you sent. Now that this issue is cleared up, I will let you in on a little secret…. From many years of trial and error I have learned…You only wake sleeping men if there is a buck in the yard, larger than the one he has hanging on the wall OR if there is an intruder in the house that has actually been spotted and identified as dangerous. I hope this helps for your future calling endeavors and remember Jenny…. Friends don’t let friends drunk dial….

Memories of Past New Year’s Eves

December 31st, 2012 Comments off

For several years Tim and I attended New Year’s Eve services at the church we attended – Journey of Faith in Redondo Beach, CA.  The service usually ended with candles, prayers and warm feelings toward God and man.   It is a church of 2,000 with large and friendly crowds.

One year, when I was alone, I decided to go back to the small church Bill and I attended for 20 years when we were together.  Several of the same friends were there as when we were members.  It was a bittersweet moment as I stood with that much smaller group of believers and  held candles in a circle.  It was an odd feeling being there without Bill, and my heart was heavy as I entered into the new year.   I never went back.  Too painful.

Most years I  have watched the ball fall in Times Square.  Before Dick Clark’s/Ryan Secrest era it was Guy Lombardo and his Orchestra from some elegant ballroom playing Auld Lang Syne. Even though we have three more hours before it is 12:00 in my time zone, I accept New York as official.  I mean, who could top a million people freezing their kazoos off and loving it? What a town!

California may not put on much of a show at midnight, but boy oh boy, New Year’s Day, we strut our stuff with the best floats and bands in the world.  The Rose Parade is simply masterful in presentation.  There is a lot of talent on display and thousands of man hours spent putting those rose petals on one at a time.

I remember watching the parade when I was a girl in Arkansas and wishing I could visit sunny California some day.  It seemed like such a magical place, so clean and pretty.  I never, in my wildest dreams, expected to live there.  You just never know, do you?

What will 2013 bring? We don’t know that either. Let’s keep ‘prayed up’ and with God’s help we’ll handle whatever comes our way.

Hip hip hooray . . . Happy New Year, Everyone!

Isaiah 40:31 Wait upon the Lord . . .

King James Bible (Cambridge Ed.)

But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Are you a good ‘waiter’?

Layla Marie Simpkins

December 29th, 2012 Comments off

Even though many things have gone wrong in our world this past year, many things have gone right.  For instance: this sweet baby girl was born to Matt and Naomi Simpkins.  Beautiful, innocent and knowing no fear.

Layla

A prayer for Layla:

Dear God, please keep your hand of protection around this precious child.  May she learn who you are and accept you from an early age.  May she  serve you openly and prayerfully.  May she grow in wisdom and become the person you want her to be every day of her life.  Let those around Layla learn from her, as she learns from them.  In your son’s name we pray, Amen

2012 a year of Loss (for a gain in health) for Pastor Terry Miller

December 29th, 2012 Comments off

Pastor Terry Miller of The First Assembly of God Church in Pocahontas, AR has lost 110 lbs. and is a great inspiration to many who are following his lead.

Changing his eating habits and having a regular walking routine are two keys to the weight loss.  His wife and son have also lost a significant number of pounds . They are a much thinner and healthier family now.

God needs healthy men and women in leadership: mind, body and spirit. Congratulations Pastor, may the Millers continue to be blessed in every way.

Holiday Heartburn (Too Much of a Good Thing?)

December 29th, 2012 Comments off

WebMd:

Heartburn: Faulty Valve

In some people, the sphincter between the stomach and esophagus doesn’t work as well as it should.

This allows acid to seep into the esophagus (called acid reflux), where it can cause pain and irritation.

Not everyone with acid reflux suffers from heartburn, and some people with “heartburn” symptoms

don’t actually have acid reflux but may have some other condition causing this pain.

During this time of year we often feel entitled to eat a little more , even of the foods that ‘bother us’.  It is as if those spicy foods don’t count if we are at a party or buffet, after all, it’s a holiday!  For those of us who don’t imbibe, this is our ‘hangover’.  We pay a price for overindulgence at the table.

This illustration  of what is happening when we overeat or eat the wrong thing is not too pleasant to look at, but maybe, just maybe, it might remind us to take it easy on the ‘good stuff’ so we don’t suffer later.

Yeah, it’s a bummer!
