What Hasn’t Changed All That Much in 100 Years? Books

January 30th, 2013 Comments off

 Books

books-then-and-now
Many have predicted the demise of books since the advent of the computer, and Kindle and other downloadable reading devices are in the process of changing the publishing industry, but the fact is that nothing beats the good old paperback in terms of portability. Also, you can’t get your favorite author to sign an e-book, nor can you underline important points or scribble stuff in the margins with a Kindle.
And What happens if the power grid goes out or someone steals your reader? You lose your entire library! That’s why the printed book will never entirely die—it’s just too necessary! And the beauty of it is that books haven’t changed much in terms of how they are produced since Gutenberg printed a few dozen Bibles way back when.

What is special about the Mexican Hairless dog? (Other than his natural good looks!)

Soothing Heat for Chronic Pain

A Mexican hairless dog called a Xolo is known for generating intense body heat. An organization called Paws for Comfort trains Xolos to be service dogs for people with fibromyalgia and other forms of chronic pain that respond to heat. People get relief just by placing their hurting limbs against the dog’s body or lying up next to it. Some dogs have even been trained to ride around wrapped around the neck of a person with chronic neck pain.

In Appreciation for you . . .

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, good night . . . whichever one fits your time of dropping by for a visit.  It is a cool thought to imagine my cyber family and friends clicking on the schoolmarm site at different times in the day.  Some of you tell me you come by every day, as part of your routine.  Thank you!  Some of you check in once a week, then spend more time . . . thank you too!  Some of you find  us by accident, ‘stumble upon’ is the term used, and that is fine as well.  Some of you are from countries with different languages and may not understand the English, but you understand the pictures. However you get here, however long you stay, my hope is that you will find something uplifting and life affirming.

We pray:  God bless the Dear Hearts who come to the website, may they feel you near and draw closer to you each day. In your son’s name we pray, Amen

“Just Being Jana”

As I opened the door to my Jeep a familiar sound rang through the parking lot of WalMart. BAM….BAM….BAM-BAM-BAM…. For a split second I had a flashback to The Spousal Unit shooting in the back yard and wasn’t alarmed… Then it hit me where I was and I went into survival mode. First I scoured the parking lot for my child and Kyle and spotted them at the front door. “Good”, I thought, “They are out of harms way.” I was talking on the phone so I had “Tell Someone” covered. I kept my cool and using my door as a shield I stepped out to locate the source of this sound. As my “cat like” reflexes kicked in I honed in on the shots coming from the van 2 parking spots over. BAM….BAM….I crouched down, phone in hand, child in sight and waited for more activity. Just then, a probably 7 to 8 year old boy jumps out of the van with his pink toy gun and aimed it directly at what I assume to be the birth mother of this demon spawn. While in the back of my head I was shouting “Shoot her…Shoot her” I was extremely glad it wasn’t a real gun scenario and super releived I had not gone into my next survival step of hitting the ground face down and covering my head…..

MeHope you had a good weekend, that you rested and feel ready to take on a new week. Did you manage to give a little time to the Lord?  No, I’m not trying to make you feel guilty if you did not, I’m just trying to get in your business where I don’t belong!  No, not that either, it is just a reminder that the ear of the Lord is available 24/7, 365 days of the year!  There is no time we can not whisper a prayer to Him, making us more aware that He is with us.  So, if you are at work, He’s there, so why not say hello and ask for His guidance for the rest of the day? If you are at home or elsewhere, why not bring Him into whatever you have planned?

We pray: We welcome you Lord Jesus into our lives, give us a vivid awareness of your presence.  Let us give our hearts to you completely as we accept your love and Lordship over our lives.  Amen

Saul Saw the Light . . . Have You?

“As I was on the road, approaching Damascus about noon, a very bright light from heaven suddenly shone down around me. I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’
“‘Who are you, lord?’ I asked.
“And the voice replied, ‘I am Jesus the Nazarene, the one you are persecuting.’
-Acts 22:6-8

Hi Friends, Every time I read this I think about how absolutely astounding it must have been for Saul, who would later be called Paul, to be confronted by Jesus himself.  What a moment.  It changed the man forever.

We  may not have this kind of encounter with Jesus, but what we do experience can be powerful and life changing for us too.  Once you turn your life over to him and stop fighting God, the peace ‘that passes all understanding’ fills your heart.

That doesn’t mean you won’t have problems.  Any Christ follower will tell you that’s not true.  It certainly wasn’t true for Paul.  You can read about his travels and all the hardships he went through to know that the way was not made trouble-free  . . . but the way WAS  made!

Even with all the beatings, jailings, and traumas that Paul faced in his service for the Lord, he never went back to his old life. He had peace in his soul and knew “in whom he believeth.”  What an example to us.

That’s it for now.  Peace be with you my friends,  Pastor Rick
