Mother’s Day Remembered Thanks to Polaroid

Mama worried about all her boxes of pictures, and would ask,  “What’s going to happen to them?”

She insisted that we ‘kids’  go through the family photos and take the ones we wanted.  It was an activity that always led to extended conversations and laughter, as different snapshots were passed around the room with us recalling who, what, when, and where.  They brought back instant memories of the past.

Many of the early Polaroids did not survive very well, but this one did.   I love imagining how happy Mama was when she opened the envelope on Mother’s day over 30 years ago, and saw that big beautiful smile on my Tim’s face , the grandson she affectionately called her ‘blonde-haired blue-eyed boy’.

We phoned her that day, and she ‘made a fuss’ over the picture .  He  smiled even broader listening to his grandma’s voice telling him how much she loved him.

img457A physician told this story about her then-four-year-old daughter:

On the way to preschool, the doctor had left her stethoscope on the car seat, and her little girl picked it up and began playing with it. Be still, my heart, she thought  my daughter wants to follow in my footsteps and be a doctor!

Then the child spoke into the instrument: “Welcome to McDonald’s. May I take your order?”

Happy Mother’s Day . . . planned or not !
