An update from Mary

Photo on 2011-10-19 at 13.02 #2 Hello Friends,

If you have missed my personal touch on the blog then I will explain.  I have been in Arkansas for the last six weeks helping my brother Jamie who is recovering from cancer.

I will be a long time  processing what I experienced as a caregiver.  It is very hard to see someone suffering.  You do what you can, follow directions from the doctors as best as you can, and in my case, you pray a great deal.

I am happy to report that Jamie is making good progress, but each day is filled with challenges. With the continued loving help of his dearest friend, Louise, he is staying in his home, receiving home health care from a local agency.  They provide nursing, physical therapy, speech therapy, personal care (bathing) and light housework.

Jamie is on a feeding tube until he is able to take food by mouth.  This is a most unpleasant arrangement for him and this is where we are focusing our prayers. . .  that he will regain his swallow reflex.  Chemotherapy and radiation saved his life but also damaged good cells along the way.  He has to be able to swallow correctly or he will aspirate and get pneumonia.  So please join us in praying for him.

Prayers are also with Louise.  We made a good team, working together for Jamie’s well being, and in the meantime we became friends.  So, that was an unexpected bonus.

Thanks for being a faithful reader.  I had scheduled posts for you every day for two months, so I did not have to work on the blog while in Arkansas, but now I will start working again to bring you new and interesting things for July.  God Bless You Always!

cakeJackie Lynne Shaffer:
Frozen berries, dry cake mix, and 1 can of sprite. yummy cobbler. It sounds so easy – and it is good and weight watcher friendly! Ingredients
Two 12-oz bags frozen mixed berries
1 box white cake mix (no pudding)
1 can of diet 7-up or sierra mist (clear soda)Instructions
Place frozen fruit in a 9×13 baking dish. Add dry cake mix over the top. Pour soda slowly over cake mix. DO NOT stir the cake mix and the pop – this will give you a ‘crust’. If you stir the two, you will hsve a cake like topping.Bake 350 for 45-50 min.

You may be able to use frozen peaches instead of mixed berries.

Kleven, Ukraine

The leafy green Kleven train tunnel is a beautiful example of what happens when nature is allowed to grow freely around manmade infrastructure. The tunnel was made over many years as the passing train molded the trees’ lines. The train turned a luscious piece of woodland into aunique passageway as it traveled back and forth 3 times a day over several years.

In addition to serving as a train route, the tunnel is used by lovers to make a wish – it is said that if they are sincere in their love, their wishes will come true. If you are out and about Ukraine, don’t miss this fantastic green passageway – whether you are with a loved one, or on your own.
