1936, Children Choppin’ Cotton in Arkansas

chopping cotto

“Children chopping cotton. Near Marked Tree, Arkansas. (Ages, left to right: ten years, thirteen years, eight years.)” Taken by Farm Security Administration photographer Carl Mydans in June of 1936.

The department of Arkansas Heritage posted this picture on FB.  The boys’ ages are listed as 13 and 8, but they look like twins to me.    Chopping cotton had to have been a hard job for anyone but especially for young children.

The ground looks hard and was probably hot to those little bare feet. I wish we knew more about their situation: were their parents there, who took the picture, how long did they have to work, were they taken out of school to do this or did they even have a school to go to?

On second thought: I notice that they are not dirty, the little dress not wrinkled, no sweat to show the  strain of a hard day working in the hot sun.  Was it the beginning of the work day or was this a posed picture by Carl Mydans, as an example of children working?  Maybe they were not real farm workers at all. I guess I am hoping that is the case.

One picture may be worth a thousand words, but it can also evoke a thousand questions from ‘enquiring minds’ like mine.

Sherlock and Watson

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went on a camping trip. After a good meal and a bottle of wine, they lay down for the night, and went to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend.“Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see.”Watson replied, “I see millions and millions of stars.”

“What does that tell you?” Holmes asked.

Watson pondered for a minute. “Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets.

Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, I can see that God is all-powerful and that we are small and insignificant.

Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow.

What does it tell you?”

Holmes was silent for a minute, then spoke.

” Watson, you idiot!  It tells me that somebody has stolen our tent!”
