Bamboo Forest, Japan

Bamboo lane in Japan

I have bamboo growing in my backyard and it helps separate my neighbors view from mine.  It is fast growing and spreads viciously if you allow it.  I have had to dig many roots up from the lawn area as they have grown horizontally from where they were intended.  There is a kind you can get where they won’t do that, or so I am told, but my bamboo stand was here before I arrived and I’m sure it will be here when I am long gone. I think it will be very hard to get rid of  . . . but I’ll leave that to the next person who takes over  some day.

unknown_11Little  is known about this enterprising London Shoemaker who built, or had built, his 1929 16H Norton into a moving advertisement. But where is the name?  Maybe this was just a trial run . . .  I guess curious folks had to follow him and the dog to see just where he set up shop.

Very clever, and the dog seems perfectly content as a sidecar companion.

Billie Holiday, talent and grief traveled with her. How many times has her story been repeated in the lives of ‘stars’?

Billie Holiday by Carl Van Vechten 1949Billie Holiday (born Eleanora Fagan; April 7, 1915 – July 17, 1959) was an American jazz singer, songwriter, and actress.

Nicknamed “Lady Day” by her friend and musical partner Lester Young, Holiday had a seminal influence on jazz and pop singing.

Her vocal style, strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists, pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo. wikipedia

Although her life was brief (45years) and from all reports, painful, she was prolific and produced many songs that can still be heard today.  To learn more go to her official  website, www.billieholiday.com
