A Mother’s Voice

September 30th, 2015 Comments off

As I returned home from taking my elderly neighbor to an appointment, I heard my Mother’s voice say,You’ve done your good deed for the day.”

It made me smile and then it made me think:  what words of mine come back to my son?  Are they words of criticism or words of encouragement and faith?  Are they affirming or condemning?  Are they  depressing or uplifting?  Naturally, I hope he filters out all but the positive, just as you hope your kids will.

Our words do matter.  Not just to our children but to everyone we know.  They sometimes appear to bounce off, but many times our words go deep and they linger within their hearts and become foundational.

I am grateful that the words I hear from my Mother’s voice help me to believe in myself, and to believe that I am loved.  I hope they are the same words that come to my son’s ears when he hears my voice within himself.

I renewed my driver’s license yesterday. Haven’t changed a lot physically in 4 years. Poof’s a little smaller, eye sight’s a little worse but for the most part, still the same. The girl behind the counter took my information, plugged it in the computer and then had me read a statement about all the information being correct and perjury and do I swear I’m not making any false statements, etc. I hesitated for a moment and asked if this had my weight on it. She said “No”. Alrighty then…We are good to go!

Holy Hill: Hubertus, Wisconsin

September 27th, 2015 Comments off

This is one of the most awesome settings for a church that I have ever seen. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Holy Hill of Hubertus, Wisconsin.

On July 16, 2006, a Mass was held celebrating 100 years of Carmelite stewardship at the site. During that Mass it was announced that Pope Benedict XVI had named Holy Hill a minor basilica.  There are fewer than 60 minor basilicas in the United States.

The shrine is located in 400 acres  of woods atop a high kame ( a geological feature, an irregularly shaped hill or mound composed of sand, gravel and till that accumulates in a depression on a retreating glacier, and is then deposited on the land surface with further melting of the glacier ).

When I visited I huffed and puffed up the 178-step observation tower to view the Milwaukee skyline 30 miles away.

Wisconsin has much to offer any time of the year, but great for a summer vacation. I found the Ice Age Trail just fascinating and educational.

From his wife Linda ( my sister)

“This is the young doctor I fell in love with and married 43 years ago. He may look just a little different now, but his heart is the same, as is mine. I love you and wish you a Happy 70th Birthday!”
