Guest Writer Lisa Love – “Puppy Training . . . HELP!!!”

November 10th, 2015 Comments off

Ok…calling all puppy experts. HELP is needed in the puppy training area. Just received a new bundle of joy yesterday. Meet Cooper. He’s an 8 week old Akita. And yes…I was warned that training a puppy is hard work. I now get it!

Can anyone shed their expertise on:

Potty training – tried the crate thing last night. He HATED it! Cried all night…thus I was up all night. He even went #1 inside the crate a few times and I was told they typically do not do this. He’s gone #1 many times in the house and it hasn’t been 24 hours that I’ve had him. No #2 inside the house yet…crossing my fingers.

Obedience – he doesn’t listen at all.

Biting – he bites everything…shoes, furniture, cords, toes, etc. I’m guessing he’s teething?

I know I need to get with a trainer, but I’m a little hesitant only because the vet (took him to a vet yesterday to get checked out) said at his age he’s very vulnerable to diseases. I can’t bring him around other animals until 16 weeks.

Any advice is greatly appreciated! BTW…after a long and hard first night, he is now thankfully chilled out and sleeping!

“Bergen is getting to wear her new rain slicker on this morning’s walk. She didn’t like it and was hesitant about walking period, until I told her I saw a rabbit, then no problem. It worked pretty good!”

Wonder if this would work on dog urine? Yeah, I have an older dog who has accidents.

Family of Dog Lovers . . . And What’s Not to Love?

June 21st, 2015 Comments off

At a recent family ‘get together’ in Missouri with the Niberts, Dees, VandePlougs, Simpkins and Borlands, the dog population numbered 10!  They,  along with all the big and little cousins,  had a wonderful time.

To bad the Taylors couldn’t make the trip, Muneca feels left out! She thinks the second step from the top was left open  just for her.

Well, this is one way!

10173578_1027648760677794_4931422412343093008_nOne innovative company has created a vending machine that’s dispensing help for both the environment and our furry friends.

The Turkish company Pugedon recently introduced a vending machine in Istanbulthat releases food and water for the city’s stray dogs in exchange for recycled plastic bottles, Big Think reported. Once someone deposits their bottle at the top, food is released at the bottom. The Pugedon Smart Recycling Boxes operate at no charge to the city, and the recycled bottles cover the cost of the food.

The simple machine will provide a steady source of sustenance to the animals, who often rely on the area’s residents to feed them. It’s also bringing some positive change to a place where the fate of stray animals has not always been a happy one.

Turkey is known for its large numbers of stray animals roaming its urban areas. The city of Istanbul alone is home to more than 150,000 stray dogs and cats, according to Deutsche Welle. While some welcome their company, others complain that the animals are sources of disease and danger.

These complaints have led the Turkish government to draft a law which would require thousands of stray dogs to be transported to a “wildlife park,” removing the animals from the urban environment which they have adapted to, Deutsche Welle reports.Dogs have also allegedly been the targets of poisoning campaigns, according to the Associated Press.

The Pugedon vending machines aim to give these stray animals a brighter future, while also encouraging its users to get in a healthy recycling habit.
