When Elvis Was Young and So Were We: Jailhouse Rock

July 7th, 2016 Comments off
The warden threw a party in the county jail. The prison band was there and they began to wail.
The band was jumpin’ and the joint began to swing. You should’ve heard those knocked out jailbirds sing.
Let’s rock Everybody, let’s rock.
Everybody in the whole cell block

was dancin’ to the Jailhouse Rock. Spider Murphy played the tenor saxophone, Little Joe was blowin’ on the slide trombone.
The drummer boy from Illinois went crash, boom, bang, the whole rhythm section was the Purple Gang.
Let’s rock Everybody, let’s rock.
Everybody in the whole cell block
was dancin’ to the Jailhouse Rock.Number forty-seven said to number three:
“You’re the cutest jailbird I ever did see.
I sure would be delighted with your company, come on and do the Jailhouse Rock with me.”
Let’s rock Everybody, let’s rock.
Everybody in the whole cell block
was dancin’ to the Jailhouse Rock.

Run, run, run, run The sad sack was a sittin’ on a block of stone way over in the corner weepin’ all alone.

The warden said, “Hey, buddy, don’t you be no square. If you can’t find a partner use a wooden chair.”
Let’s rock Everybody, let’s rock. Everybody in the whole cell block was dancin’ to the Jailhouse Rock.

Shifty Henry said to Bugs, “For Heaven’s sake, no one’s lookin’, now’s our chance to make a break.”

Bugsy turned to Shifty and he said, “Nix nix, I wanna stick around a while and get my kicks.”
Let’s rock Everybody, let’s rock. Everybody in the whole cell block was dancin’ to the Jailhouse Rock.

One for the Kids (Bet you can sing it too!)

Made famous by Gene Autry in 1950, it has been a favorite with kids ever since.

Peter Cottontail

Here comes Peter Cottontail
Hoppin’ down the bunny trail
Hippity hoppin’,

                     Easter’s on its way

Bringin’ every girl and boy
Baskets full of Easter joy
Things to make your Easter bright and gay

He’s got jelly beans for Tommy
Colored eggs for sister Sue
There’s an orchid for your mommy
And an Easter bonnet too

Oh! here comes Peter Cottontail
Hoppin’ down the bunny trail
Hippity hoppity, happy Easter Day

Here comes Peter Cottontail
Hoppin’ down the bunny trail

Hippity hoppin’, Easter’s on its way

Try to do the things you should
Maybe if you’re extra good
He’ll roll lots of Easter eggs your way

You’ll wake up on Easter mornin’
And you’ll know that he was there
When you find those chocolate bunnies
That he’s hiding everywhere

Oh! here comes Peter Cottontail
Hoppin’ down the bunny trail
Hippity hoppity, happy Easter Day

Hippity hoppity, happy Easter Day

You Were Always On My Mind
recorded by Willie Nelson
written by Wayne C. Thompson and Johnny Christopher

Maybe I didn’t love you
Quite as often as I could have
Maybe I didn’t treat you
Quite as good as I should have

If I made you feel second best
Girl I’m sorry I was blind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

And maybe I didn’t hold you
All those lonely lonely times
I guess I never told you
I’m so happy that your mine

Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time

You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Tell  me     tell me
That your sweet love hasn’t died
Give me     give me one more chance
To keep you satisfied

I’ll keep you satisfied

Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Start the Year With ‘Friendship’, Lyrics by Judy Garland

 Friendship: by Judy Garland

If you’re ever in a jam, here I am
If you’re ever in a mess, S.O.S.
If you ever feel so happy you land in jail, I’m your bail

It’s friendship, friendship
Just a perfect blendship
When other friendships have been forgot
Ours will still be hot
A-lottle-dottle-dottle-dig-dig-dig

If you’re ever down a well, ring my bell
And if you’re ever up a tree just phone to me
A-yes-sir-ee
If you ever lose your teeth and you’re out to dine, borrow mine

It’s friendship, friendship
Just a perfect blendship
When other friendships have been forgate
Gate?
Ours will still be great
A-lottle-dottle-dottle-chuck-chuck-chuck
If they ever black your eyes, put me wise

If they ever cook your goose, turn me loose
And if they ever put a bullet through your brain, I’ll complain
It’s friendship, friendship
Just a perfect blendship
When other friendships have been forgit
Ours will still be it
A-lottle-dottle-dottle-hep-hep-hep

If you ever lose your mind, I’ll be kind
And if you ever lose your shirt, I’ll be hurt
If you’re ever in a mill and get sawed in half, I won’t laugh

It’s friendship, friendship
Just a perfect blendship
When other friendships are up the crick
Ours will still be slick

A-lottle-dottle-dottle-woof-woof-woof
hep-hep-hep
a-chuck-chuck-chuck
a-dig-dig-dig
Good evening friend!

Fools Rush In

recorded Ricky Nelson
written by Johnny Mercer and Ruby Bloom

Am D7 G
Fools rush in where angels fear to tread
Em Am D7
And so I come to you my love
                  G
My heart above my head
C Am D7 G
Though I see the danger there
   D7 Am A7 D7
If there's a chance for me then I don't care

Am D7 G
Fools rush in where wise men never go
    Em Am D7
But wise men never fall in love
                   G
So how are they to kn-ow
Am G Em
When we met I felt my life begin
                Am D7 Am G
So open up your heart and let this fool rush in

Repeat #2

Em Am D7 Am G
Just open up your heart and let this fool rush in

100 Years Ago: The Country Was Swinging to This Tune

Popular Song of 1912

Irving Berlin’s

Alexander’s Ragtime Band

Come on and hear
Come on and hear
Alexander’s ragtime band
Come on and hear
Come on and hear
It’s the best band in the land

They can play a bugle call like you never heard before
So natural that you want to go to war
That’s just the bestest band what am, honey lamb

Come on along
Come on along
Let me take you by the hand
Up to the man
Up to the man
Who’s the leader of the band

And if you care to hear the Swanee River played in ragtime
Come on and hear
Come on and hear
Alexander’s ragtime band

[2nd verse:]
Oh, ma honey
Oh, ma honey
There’s a fiddle with notes that screeches
Like a chicken
Like a chicken
And the clarinet is a colored pet
Come and listen
Come and listen
To a classical band what’s peaches
Come now, somehow
Better hurry along

[Alternate line:]
So natural that you want to hear some more

Let It Be Me
recorded by the Everly Brothers
written by Pierre Delance and Gilbert Becaud

I bless the day I found you
I want to stay around you
And so I beg you
Let it be me

Don’t take this heaven from one
If you must cling to someone
Now and forever
Let it be me

Each time we meet love
I find complete love
Without your sweet love
What would life be

So never leave me lonely
Tell me you love me only
And that you’ll always
Let it be me

Each time we meet love
I find complete love
Without your sweet love
What would life be

So never leave me lonely
Tell me you love me only
And that you’ll always
Let it be me
