Gert and Sonia

Gert did you mail your Christmas cards yet?

Yes, ’cause I don’t send many any more.

The postage too high?

Well that too, but every year I have to mark off a few more names. I guess folk’ll be marking me off too some day.  That’s just the way life is.

That’s right.  That’s right.  You know I hear my grandkids talking about sending ecards instead of cards, but I’ve never seen one of them.

Me neither.

Do you think we’re missing out on something?

Could be.  Just think all our Mamas and Daddys missed out on.  But like you say, that’s the way of life, isn’t it?  One generation comes up with something new and on and on it goes.  I’d say we got in on enough!   Merry Christmas Gert.

Same to you Sonia!

Isn’t it good to be out on the front porch again?

I’ll say!  I’m tired of being cooped up in the house.

Me too! Summer has officially arrived!

The flowers are in bloom, the birds are singing, and I sure enjoyed turning the furnace off!

Me too!  ‘Course now we’ll have to turn that blasted air conditioner on!

Just enjoy the moment, Gert.  Just enjoy the moment.

Might As Well Stayed Home

It was good to see you in church last Sunday, Gertie.

I thought I should make an appearance so they wouldn’t think I was dead.

Well, I’m sure everyone was happy to see you. Did you enjoy it?

As much as I could, with  Theo Silet singing off key in the choir and the music playing so loud.

Really?  I didn’t notice.

And the dress Mannie Hendeson was wearing was unfit for church, some example for her kids! I saw Leonard Skylow looking her over as she walked by. And what’s  Annie Middleton doing dying her hair that color?

I’m afraid I didn’t notice that either, Gertie.

Oh, for heaven’s sake, Sonia, don’t you pay any attention when you to go to church?

Gert, I see  Selma got her new roof put on.  Must have cost a pretty penny.

Well, I hear she’s been saving up for it.

That’s good.

Yeah, she said she’d been putting  money away for a rainy day, and boy has it been raining!

Well Sonia, did you hear about Edwin and Cita running around together?

I don’t know how much running around they are doing, but I hear they are keeping company.  They are sitting together in church.  I think it is sweet.

Sweet?   Why her husband’s only been dead for five years and his wife only four!

Gertie,  they can’t bring back their loved ones no matter how long they wait! Why be alone if they can be happy together?

But Sonie those four were the best of friends, makes you wonder what was going on before . . .

No it doesn’t Gert, no it doesn’t!  I don’t think like that.  I’d be ashamed of myself if I were you!  Robert and Evelyn loved Cita and Edwin, they would want them to get on with life.  After all, they are not kids, they don’t have forever.  Why should they be sad and lonesome?

Well, being sad and lonesome never hurt me.  I’ve been alone for thirty years and you don’t see me acting like a fool!   When Ernie left I said I’d never be happy again and I’ve kept my word.  I’m just as miserable now as I was back then.

Oh Gertie!

Some Things a Girl Doesn’t Forget

Gert, did you hear about  Ranley Potters?Yes I did. I read it this morning in the town paper. Natural causes they said. You two sure were sweet on each other when you were young, do you remember? Why of course I remember! How could I forget that? I may forget a lot of things but I’m not about to forget Ranley Ebsen.  You know what he did –  went up North to work  over summer vacation, met another girl and well, that was that, he never moved back.Lord help Gertie, don’t tell me you’ve been carryin’ a thing for him all these years. Don’t be silly, but a person can’t help but wonder what life would have been like if he hadn’t gone to Rockford that year. Well you’ll never know now, that’s for sure.  Besides, you went on and had a good life without him. I did . . . but,  my goodness, how can Ranley be gone?  He was so young.Young? He was a great-grandfather! Not in my mind.  In my mind, he was still young and handsome. I think you better cool off before you overheat thinking such thoughts!  Would you care for some sweet iced tea?If you’re gettin’ up anyway that’d be fine. You know Gert, I never did see what you saw in Ranley Potters, good looking or not. Well, let’s just say  that Ranley was, and always will be, my favorite broken heart. sigh

Wife is Thinking Ahead

Did you hear that Selma had her portrait painted?

She did?

Yes and  get this . . . she had the artist paint her just dripping with diamond rings, diamond necklace, emerald bracelets, a ruby broach, and a gold Rolex.

Why, she doesn’t have anything like that. Why’d she have him paint that on her?

So if Ed remarries, the second wife will go crazy looking for it.

Well Gert, I see the Roto-Rooter trucks are gone from the Schoolmarm’s house.

She sure had a bunch of them over there just for one sewer line.

First  her roof had to be replaced and now this.  Oh well, new roof over her, new plumbing under her, she’s sitting pretty now.

Well, if you ask me, she could have used that money on a face lift and an everything-else lift and then she really would be sitting pretty.

Oh Gert!

What’s to Celebrate?

December 14th, 2010 Comments off

Aren’t the lights pretty on the houses Gertie?

It’s a lot of trouble to go to  just for a few days.

But aren’t they pretty?

Costs electricity to run them, too!

But aren’t they pretty?

Yes, they’re pretty! But some of these people are in such bad shape, what do they have to celebrate?

Oh Gert, they are celebrating the birth of Jesus, the birth of hope.  If they have that, they have a whole lot to celebrate.

Well, I still say it’s a lot of trouble to go through for just a few days.

sigh Merry Christmas, anyway, Gert.

Did you going to your high school reunion this summer Gert?

No.  You couldn’t pay me to go.

For heaven’s sakes why not.  I always enjoy going to mine.

Well, for one thing, half of them think they’re  better than me.

Oh Gertrude, that’s not true.  What about the other half?

The other half ?  Well,  I think I’m better than them!

Mercy me Gert!  You sure don’t make it easy.
